live, this is kron4 news at 11:00. and you're looking at a live picture of the capital building in washington, d.c. the clock keeps ticking as the nation is now just about a few days away from the deadline to raise the debt limit. today was a day of theatrics in capitol hill. a stalemate sets up a long weekend of negotiations and hopefully compromise. kron4 has the latest. >> democrats applied the pressure friday. >> we're waiting for them to

do something, anything. speaker boehner spoke up and spoke out friday afternoon after losing gop support the day before. >> i stuck my neck out a mile to try to get an agreement with the president of the united states. this house has acted and it is time for the administration and time for our colleagues across the aisle. put something on the table. tell us where you are. >> republicans barely pass the boehner bill only to have it killed by senate democrats a short time later. >> it's time for us to be adults. it's what the american people want. it's time to compromise. >> what if a compromise can't be reached and the u.s. does default? what does that mean for the average person? kron4's financial expert said the impact would be rising interest rates. that rate would go up, meaning you'd have to pay more each month. if you're paying student loans,

those loans would get higher and getting approval for a new loan would go from hard to harder. it would likely go up to 6%. experts say the market would get crushed. losing about 30%, which is why some say this would turn into a global economic crisis. but most insiders believe things like social security and active military will still get paid even if the u.s. does default. i'm grant, kron4 news. >> residents in belmont are on alert. that's after seven homes are burglarized in one week. take a look at this map. police say the crimes have occurred in the central section of belmont and east of alameda. kron4 tells us who police are looking for. >> the two most recent home burglaries happened on oak null drive on thursday. police say it appears the thieves are breaking into homes between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. when people are usually at work.

authorities believe the burglars are knocking on doors and if no one answers they go to the back of the home and either break a window or force to gain access. she has lived on this street with her husband for 50 years. a man holding a clipboard and yellow hard hat came to her home claiming to be a utility worker. >> i talk to him and he wasn't saying what he wanted and he said he wanted -- i said well that's phony. i came down and said no, no, i guess he like to get into the house. but since he saw two of us, i guess he changed his mind. >> she just purchased this home and got the key to move in. she says the realtor who sold her the home never mentioned the recent crime in the neighborhood. >> i wasn't aware of the burglaries recently until you just told me. >> how concerning is this? >> it is very concerning. i'm going to make sure all the doors and windows are shut. >> police want to question two

men who they are calling persons of interest. a white male 25 to 30 years old, thin build with short blond hair. he asked a resident if they have a dog for sale and left after being told he had the wrong address. the others described as a black male 20 to 30 years old, medium build. he was seen knocking on doors and driving a gray bmw sedan. police increased patrols in the areas where the burglaries have taken place. they want residents to use common sense. they say to make sure to lock windows and doors and set the alarm. in belmont, kron4 news. oakland police are releasing a new clue tonight in hopes to catching the man. known to many people as brother john. the 29-year-old was gunned down in east oakland while he was doing what he was most known for, feeding the homeless. investigators say the shooter was seen driving a ford windstar minivan similar to this one. they believe it was a 2001 or

newer model. kron4 reports, the oakland community comes together tonight to remember the man who helped so many. >> it was an emotional vigil honoring paris powell friday evening. his pregnant wife cried as she returned to the place where someone shot at the entire family killing paris powell, also known as brother john, lolita and her two young daughters survived a drive by shooting, but she can't go on without her husband. >> family, friends, and even strangers paid tribute to the man they say devoted his life to feeding the homeless and helping domestic violence victims in east oakland. it was right here that police say someone drove up to the family of four and opened fire after they gave a hot meal to this man, william holloway on 47th avenue. >> not a bad person.

he doesn't have any enemies. >> brother john helped holloway for one year. he just started a new job recently and got out of homelessness. brother john was the nicest man he ever met. >> how many people get out of their bed at night to cook food for people and go around and take it to them while it's still hot? not very many. >> it's hard to imagine any good that will come out of this. but william holloway reunited with his daughter after not seeing her for twenty years. the daughter apparently recognized his name after seeing him on the news. holloway says brother john took care of him, even in death. in oakland, i'm don, kron4 news. it was a pretty nice day out there today. we saw relief from the heat in our valley. temperatures in the 80s. 83 in concorde. 87 in livermore. 80 down in san jose and cooler

close to the coastline. as we head into tomorrow, the fog will be an issue at the coastline. dense fog for our base shores and for the coastline tomorrow morning. fog hugging the coast through the afternoon and then by the 4:00 hour, some high clouds streaming in to the south bay. we're seeing subtropical moisture wrapping around an area of high pressure. you can see, we have some showers. this could shift up to the north. i'll tell you about it coming up in a bit. we'll be back after this. turn left.

in world news tonight in norway, a national memorial service was held today. the prime minister comforted relatives of the many victims killed in last week's bombing and shooting rampage there. in fact, another person has died from his injuries bringing the death toll now to 77. at today's ceremony, everyone held roses and members of the audience held bouquets in the air each time a speaker took the stage. the crew piloting a doomed air france jet over the atlantic two years ago was not

properly trained. that's according to a new report on that 2009 crash. the report says the pilots did not realize the plane was in a stall. they were not trained to fly manually and never informed the passengers that something was wrong. killing all 228 people on board. it had been headed from rio to paris. and there's also a new report on last year's crash in russia that killed poland's president. that report blames quote, the confusing landing instructions from the russian air traffic controllers. but it also says that the polish pilots were not properly trained, saying there was an overly slow reaction to a warning that they were flying too low. the accident killed dozens of senior officials, along with the president and the first lady. it was the worst polish disaster since world war ii. we'll be back. more news after the break.

if you plan on driving on the bay bridge this weekend, the chp will be out in force to make sure you slow down or you will be ticketed. you might remember nearly two years ago the driver of this truck lost control and went over the side of the s curve on the bay bridge. a number of precautions were added after that accident and now officers say they are increasing patrols along the bridge again because of speeding drivers. kron4's j.r. stone has details. >> i'm going 40 coming this way and they are passing me. >> walter hernandez isn't the only one who noticed faster drivers along the bay bridge into san francisco. officers of chp say their sensors showing drivers are going 10 miles per hour over the limit. >> i'm happily married and i want to go home, you know? i don't want to end up in the road smashed up against a wall. >> in an effort to slow down

speeders, the chp is adding patrols during nonpeak hours, reminding drivers it's 50 on the bridge and 40 along the s curve. upsetting news to others. >> i just see it they are trying to get more revenue out of the deal. i don't see this being effective. >> we have too many police and highway patrol. >> stats aside, friday afternoon i drove westbound towards san francisco. at almost 60 miles per hour i was passed over and over and over and over again. showing that those sensors might be right on track. >> i think that people should just set their alarm clock earlier and get to work on time. you know what i'm saying. >> keep in mind, if you are caught speeding along this s curve or the bay bridge, a speeding ticket will likely cost you between $150 and $300. for now, j.r.

stone, kron4 news. >> we talked with officers about the people who are speeding on the bridge. they say it appears that drivers are going faster because they are getting accustomed to navigating the s curve. >> it's been quite some time since the s curve was put in place and i think people are accustomed to the road. being a little more complacent. we want to be there to remind people, let's focus on our speed. >> in other news around the bay, thousands attended a memorial for a murdered marin county sheriff deputy. family and friends gathered to remember john. he was offduty at the time helping a family friend to deal with a domestic situation. the suspected gunman was also fatally shot. loved ones say he was always quick to lend a hand or to make others laugh. >> a bay area man files a lawsuit against bart. he says a bart police officer beat him last june.

these are photographs of jason wong's bruises and abrasions that came from the incident. an officer told him to turn down his cell phone music at the west oakland station. he claims he did turn it down, but beaten anyway. wong spent two days in jail and received a citation. bart officials refused to comment. >> a community in mourning after police say a father killed his son and then turned the gun on himself. these are pictures of the victim, andrew of university of san diego student. santa clara county sheriffs discovered the bodies last night in a home. deputies say they recovered a 38 caliber handgun from near the father's body. we're going to see a couple changes this weekend starting tomorrow with slightly cooler temperatures into the afternoon with mid 80s inland and low 70s for our bay shores. into sunday, into the afternoon, we're going be seeing high clouds and possibly dry lightning down in the south

bay. taking a live look outside. seeing plenty of shower activities and southeast california. also through arizona and nevada. subtropical moisture s over us. this is going to shift a little bit to the north, but mainly into sunday. it will bring us high cloud coverage for the south bay, but high base thunderstorms for the south bay mountains into sunday afternoon. that's going to mean just dry lightning, no rain expected out of it. as for tomorrow starting the day off foggy in the north bay through the peninsula as well. fog clearing back by 9:00 and of course the coastline where it will remain through the afternoon. we will see it happens slightly cooler into tomorrow afternoon. let's take a look. 83 in san jose. should be low 90s in gilroy for that garlic festival. 70s and 80s for your bay shore. 83 in concorde and 70s and 80s

in the north bay with 67 in san francisco. a look at your seven-day around the bay forecast, slightly cooler conditions and there's the chance of dry lightning. as we head into tuesday and wednesday, slightly warmer conditions, but the fog returns thursday and friday, cooling it down for us. >> wildlife rescuers are trying to corral two young sea lions. so far the mammal center made four unsuccessful attempts to cop capture them. they will continue to monitor the sea lions. a tennis matchup tonight as serena williams battles. makes the giants pay tonight in cincinnati. veteran has giants with highlights and all the sports. he's next. >ú
